Getting ready for Janmastami cont…

Dear devotees,

Hare Krsna.
Dandvat pranam. Srila Prabhupad ki Jai.

Srila Rupa Goswami writes:

smeram bhagi-traya-paricitam saci-vistirna-drstim
vamsi-nyastadhara-kisalayam ujjvalam candrakena
govindakhyam hari-tanum itah kesi-tirthopakanthe
ma preksisthas tava yadi sakhe! bandhu-sange ‘sti rangah

One meaning of Preksha is to see with proper examination….so Srila Rupa Goswami says ‘ma preksisthas’…do not see…what to not see – Govindahyam…one boy named Govinda who is standing on the banks of Kesi-ghat (kesi-tirthopakante),,,and how is He standing – smeram bhai-treya….crooked or bent in three places, this boy Govind is standing in such a way that He is bent at 3 places (neck, waist, and ankles)…and what is He doing – vamsi nyastadhara…holding the flute to his Lotus lips and playing it beautifully….this boy is so enchanting and His beauty is multiplied due to ‘ujjvalam candrakena’…His dark complexioned monsoon cloud like body is glistening in full moon light…..

So Srila Rupa Goswami is advising not to see the beautiful shyamsundar boy Govind who is standing at Keis-ghat shinning beautifully under the full moonlight…why not to see Him..because if we have any attraction for sakhe bandhu-sange stri rangah…for if we have any intention to enjoy with wife, friend, brother, friends or any relative in this material world…that intention to enjoy will be destroyed by Govind’s beauty…because now we will be captivated by this beauty and our mind will no longer want to enjoy with anyone other than Govind

Please note – this does not mean that once we see the beautiful face of Govind we leave our family and they wont be appealing to us anymore…but what it means that we will no longer selfishly see our wife, children, friends, brothers as our objects of happiness but we will see them as servants of Krsna whom we need to love and lovingly work togather in service to Krsna. We will now love our wife, brother, children, friends more than before as now we love them on a selfless platform instead of selfish platform…after watching the beautiful face of Govind, we wont feel that I am the center of my universe and my wife, children, family is for my happiness/ service but we will factually realize that Krsna is the center of all universes and everyone is meant to be for His service. My relationship with everyone is that of lovingly working togather to serve Krsna and to lovingly help them attain the goal of their human life by serving Krsna. Enough diversion…now back to Krsna Janmastami….back to meditating on Krsna.

So one may say that we see Krsna in deity form every day…why is our taste not changing? Maybe it could be that we see Krsna in deity form, in pictures (picture is also considered as a deity according to shastras)…but we are not is because we dont see Krsna there, we dont have firm belief that what we are seeing is Krsna Himself standing,..we are just seeing Him just as we see a photo of our deceased family member. What happens when we see a photo of our family member who has passed away…we see the photo but have firm belief that the person is is just a picture hanging to add to our emotions…but for Krsna it is different. In the deity and in pictures, He is present…actually He is non-different. but since we dont have that firm belief, it does not work on us.

So please meditate on this beautiful form…I am attaching this beautiful bhajan glorifying beauty of Krsna…pls read this and as you read…close your eyes to see the picture in your heart….welcome Him in our heart in the form described in this bhajan –

Shri Krishna Aha

1. (dhani go) aju pekhanu bala kheli

yab mandira bahira bheli

naba jaladhare bijuri rekha

dhandha badaiya geli

(Aha! Bravo!) Look at that small boy playing outside His house. He looks like a new monsoon cloud decorated with a lightning flash. There is a great mystery about Him.

2. (se ye) alapa-bayasi bala, janu ganthani puhapa-mala

thori darashane, asha na purala

badala madana jvala

(That) boy is very young. He wears a garland of flowers. I see Him for only a brief moment. This does not satisfy me. Flames of desire now burn within me.

3. (se ye) gauri kalebara luna, janu kajare ujora sona

keshari jiniya, majhari kshini

dulaha locana-kona

(His) body is soft like butter. He is decorated with black kajjala and with glistening gold. His slender waist defeats the lion’s waist. His sidelong glance is filled with rare glory.

4. (se ye) ishat hasani sane, mujhe hanala nayana-bane

ciranjiba rahu, panca-gaudeshvara

kabi bidyapati bane

(He) gently smiles. He looks at me from the corners of His eyes. The poet Vidyapati says: May He live eternally as the king of the five Gauda lands.

Let us fall in love with Krsna this Janmastami never to come out. Krsna loves His devotees so much that He leaves everything to be with them…have we ever experienced this kind of love? Even if we offer just few drops of water to Srimati Tulasi Maharani, offer one flower like Gajaraj, offer a Tulasi leaf like Mother Rukmini, or offer some berries like Shabari…Krsna who is the Supreme Lord and all opulent becomes completely indebted to us. And He chooses to remain indebted forever….just read sometime what Krsna said to Gopis – that their debt is so much on Him that He cant repay them back..He chose to remain eternally indebted to Gopis. So let us love Krsna in a way that he feels indebted.

Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu has taught us how to love Krsna so that He can become indebted to us forever. If Sri Krsna permits, we will discuss further about this some other time.

Now back to Janmastami.

Three personalities appeared on Janmastami. One in Mathura and two in Vrindavan. This has been beautifully described by Acharyas (Srila Viswanath Chakra varthy Thakur, Srila Jiva Goswami and many other Acharyas). Sri Krsna appeared as son of Sri Vasdev and Sri Devaki. Also during the same time in Vrindavan. Ma Yashoda gave birth to twins – one boy and one girl – Sri Krsna and Sri Yogmaya. If you would remember, we had discussed during Balaram Jayanti (and also briefly on Ekadashi before that) that Krsna ordered Yogmaya to move Sri Balaram from the womb of Devaki to the womb of Rohini…after that He asked Yogmaya to appear in the womb of Mother Yashoda to assist in His pastimes of Janmastami. So Acharyas write that Ma Yashoda gave birth to twins – Krsna and Yogmaya. In the prison house of Kamsa, Krsna appeared in front of Vasudev and Devaki in four handed Vishnu form…His parents offered prayers to Him…then He requested Sri Vasudev to take Him to Vraja at Nand Maharaj’s house…after that instruction He became a small boy and appeared as Vasudev Krsna. But in Vrindavan, Sri Krsna appeared as Himself. So when Vasudev as requested took Krsna on his head and came to the house of Nand Maharaj. At that time Ma Yashoda had already given birth to twins. So by the presence of Yogmaya…everyone fell asleep at that time and Vasudev was able to come inside the house to exchange the child. It is explained that since Vasudev was in hurry and by the arrangement of Yogmaya. he never saw the twin boy Krsna lying next to Yashoda…he only picked up Yogmaya in exchange of Krsna. When Vasudev placed Krsna who appeared in Mathura on the bed of Yashoda, that Vasudev Krsna merged in the baby Krsna which appeared through Ma Yashoda (when Krsna left Vrindavan with Akrura on invitation of Kamsa, Acharyas write that the Vasudev Krsna again came out of Ma Yashoda Krsna and went with Akrura. But the Supreme Lord Himself, Sri Krsna never left Vrindavan…as a matter of fact Sri Krsna never leaves Vrindavan…Vrindavanam parityajya padam ekam na gacchati). Also when Vasudev picked up Yogmaya, Yogmaya is the spritual energy of Krsna whose expansion is Mahamaya (which resides in this material world and we generally know it as Maya)…so when Vasudev picked up Yogmaya, she also expanded into Mahamaya and went with Vasudev but the original Yogmaya born of Yashoda stayed in Vrindavan to assist in the pastimes of Krsna. So one question comes…why did Sukadev Goswami not cover the incident of birth of Krsna through Yashoda Mai in Srimad Bhagavatam as we know it? Acharyas has given nice explanation to that also but I will leave it out of this note (but we can discuss that over a nice pate of prasadam).

So the pastimes of appearance of Krsna on Janmastami is full of wonderful rasa and mysteries. Acharyas have written voluminous commentaries on this and we should try to understand all these things. This way we develop the love for Krsna. Some unfortunate souls play cards on Janmastami which is very damaging for the consciousness.

Let us try to fast nicely for Janmastami…try to chant as much as possible Krsna’s names. read from scripture SriSri Radha Sharadbihari’s pastimes, and pray to Srimati Radharani to engage us in service of Krsna. If Srimati Radharani permits, we will write further tomorrow.
