Today is Vijaya Dashmi – Sri Ram Vijay Utsav

Dear devotees,

Hare Krsna
Dandvat Pranam. Jai Srila Prabhupad.

Today is Dashera or Vijaya Dashmi. This day is celebrated in honor of Lord Ramchandra (for victory over Ravan) and also in honor of Mother Durga (for victory over Mahisasura).

The word ‘Ram’ means pleasure giving and ‘chandra’ means the moon. It is known through our Vedic shastras that moon rays nourish the ‘rasa’ or taste in the vegetation and is very essential for its growth.. So just like moon nourishes the plant and is source for their nourishment of ‘rasa’, Lord Ramchandra is the moon which nourishes us by giving us pleasure. Lord Ramchandra is Supreme Personality of Godhead and did many wonderful pastimes, one of which is to bless Ravana by punishing him in the battlefield.

Ravan was a devotee. He was very devoted and learned. But the greed in his heart, the greed to enjoy independently from the Supreme Lord made him an adverse personality. Even Ravan’s downfall (or blessing should I say) started with shravanam…attentive hearing. When his sister Suparnakha came complaining to Ravan after her encounter with Sri Ram and Sri Lakshmanji, she described Mother Sita’s beauty to Ravan. Just like Mother Rukmini developed a strong attachment for Sri Krsna by listening about Him…similarly Ravan also developed strong attachment for Mother Sita after listening about her beauty. He started contemplating on Sita Mata’s beauty. More he contemplated, more he became attached. He could have had a chance of attaining bhakti through contemplating on Mother Sita but rather he contemplated on her as an object for his sense enjoyment…but even so that attachment ended up as beneficial to him in longer run (he got darshan of Lord Ramchandra who personally killed him)…but due to contemplating on Mother Sita as his sense object, he took the route described in Bhagavat Gita – dhyayato visayam pumsam, sangas tesu upjayate…it created attachment for Mother Sita, and then ‘kama’ or lust developed, sanjayate Kama,…then guided by that lust or kama, he went ahead with his plan to abduct Mother Sita. Ravan wanted to enjoy mother Sita for himself…he wanted Sri Lakshmiji without Narayan…he wanted the energy without the energetic but that arrangement never works. Srila Prabhupad used to say that materialists and politicians wants Ram-rajya…but does not want Lord Ramchandra…so this is Ravan. When Ravan even after kidnapping Ma Sita was not able to make her favorable to him, anger manifested in him…kamat krodho abijayate. Then – sammoha develops…which is illusion and under that illusion he forgot the position of Lord Ramchandra and Mother Sita (even he ignored it when being reminded by his well-wishers)…and thus coming under delusion (smriti vibrahma)….he started behaving like a person with no intelligence…even though he was seeing that he was loosing in battle, even though he can see that if just one monkey (Sri Hanumanji) of Lord Ramchandra’s army can burn the whole Lanka, what will hundreds of thousands of monkeys do to him…he acted adversely due to loss of intelligence and ultimately he was destroyed (pranasyati)…

So this story of Ravan is our story….as far as we have desire to enjoy these sense objects for the pleasure of our senses…we transform ourselves into Ravan…just like when subjected to anger Bruce Banner turns into a green giant named Hulk…so we sometimes when come in touch with sense objects…the desire to enjoy the objects without offering them to their rightful owner (Sri Krsna) arises,,,as we contemplate more on them our attachment for them grows stronger…then we try to get them somehow…but even after getting them or after not being able to get them…anger develops which blinds us with illusion/ delusion under whose effect our intelligence is lost and we start behaving like a self-centered irrational person…this is the root cause of all arguments in our life. Next time we differ from our wife or parents,,,just step back and start peeling back the reason for disagreement with neutral mind….bura jo dekhan mein chala, bura na milaya koi…jo dil hu khoja aapme, mujsa buro na koi.

But Lord Ramchandra is merciful, like a loving doctor he treated Ravan and liberated him from his disease by freeing him from this body….actually Ravan and Kumbhkaran (his brother) were Jay and Vijay who had appeared to fulfill the Lord’s desire to fight in battle…desire for ‘virya ras’…so it was a service to the Supreme Lord…but by doing this pastime, they left behind tons of instructions for us. Glories of Sri Ramchandra are beautifully described in Srimad Bhagavatam and more so in Sri Ram Charit Manas by Goswami Sri Tulasidasji.

So today, let us pray honestly to Sri Ramchandra along with Mother Sita, Sri Lakshmanji and His faithful servant Sri Hanumanji Maharaj – to protect us from desires to enjoy separately from Them, to help us get rid of all unwanted desires from our heart, to shoot an arrow of Their merciful glance on us so that all ‘abhadra’…inauspiciousness is removed in our heart so that space is created for Bhakti to reside in our heart. OR another way is to pray to SriSriSri Sita Ram Lakshmanji and Sri Hanumanji Maharaj to establish Bhakti in our heart…Bhakti is so powerful that it will enter in our crowded heart and push away all anarthas….let us faithfully chant – Hare Krsna Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna Hare Hare, Hare Ram Hare Ram, Ram Ram Hare Hare and invite SriSriSri Sita Ram Lakshmanji along with Sri Hanumanji Maharaj to reside in our heart. We also pray today to Their faithful servants SriSri Shiva Parvatiji (I don’t feel comfortable to only praying to Mother Durga without also praying to her husband – Lord Shiva. A wife always would feel more happier when she is worshipped along with her husband…not that we worship the wife and ignore the husband), so let us pray to SriSri Shiv Parvatiji to help us progress in Krsna Consciousness by giving us Their blessings. Ma Durga is the warden of our prison house in this material world…she has capacity by the mercy of Lord Krsna and Her husband Sri Shivsambhu, that she can award us the association of devotees and show us the path of devotion and help us in the path of devotion (just like Ma Durga helped Pipaji Maharaj..as we discussed in last Friday program)…Lord Shiva is also called Bholenath…one who is very childlike innocent…so He will recommend to Mother Durga to help us…he will recommend Sri Krsna to help us.

While today there is no fasting needed or recommended, we can at least fast from enjoying our sense objects without offering it to Lord Ramchandra on this day. Let us use our sense today to serve the master of our sense – Hrishikesha…..hrishikena Hrishikesha sevanam bhaktir ucyate…serve the Lord of our sense by our senses…that is topmost Bhakti.
