Happy Janmastami (8/9) – day of Sri Krsna’s appearance – Gokul

Hare Krsna dear devotees,
Dandvat pranam, Jai Srila Prabhupad.

Today is Janmastami, Sri Shyamsundarji’s appearance day. Sri Krsna appeared to give pleasure to His devotees…paritranaya sadhunam…..so this day should be lot pleasure giving to sadhus….He appeared simultaneously at 2 places – one at the prison house of Kamsa in Mathura in front of Mother Devaki and Maharaj Vasudev….and other at Gokul at the place of Mother Yashoda and Nand Maharaj. The birthplace in Mathura is very famous and is known as Janmasthan or Janmabhumi. Sri Krsna is named as Keshavji in Mathura, especially at the Janma bhumi.

While on the other hand, Sri Krsna…swayam Bhagavan, The Supreme Personality of Godhead appeared as son of Mother Yashoda and Sri Nand Maharaj in Gokul. This is a very simple place which increases our devotion as soon as we enter in this area…Sri Krsna appears in our heart too soon as we enter there.

Mahavan – Gokul is situated about 10 km east from Mathura. Parjanya Gopa, the father of Nand Maharaj, initially resided at Nandgaon, where he had five sons: UpaNand, AbhiNand, Nand, SuNand and Nandna – and two daughters SaNand and Nandini……His middle son Nand had no offspring and therefore Parjanya Gopa worshipped Narayan in the hope that Nand Maharaj would be blessed with the child. A voice from the sky announced that a very brave son would be born to Nand Maharaj. After this prophecy, demons began to cause a disturbance at Nandgaon. Parjanya Gopa and his family decided to move along with their relatives to along with their relatives to Vrindadvan, or Mahavan. Beholding its beauty the vrajavasi gopas began very happily reside here…

…His middle son Nand had no offspring and therefore Parjanya Gopa worshipped Narayan in the hope that Nada would be blessed with the child. A voice from the sky announced that a very brave son would be born to Nand. After this prophecy, demons began to cause a disturbance at Nandgaon. Parjanya Gopa and his family decided to move along with their relatives to Brhadvan, or Mahavan. Beholding its beauty the vrajavasi gopas began very happily reside here…

…After some time, the Supreme Personality of Godhead was born to Vasudev Maharaj and Devaki in the Kamsa’s prison house in Mathura. The Lord ordered Vasudev Maharaj to bring Him to the house of Maharaj Nand in Gokul. The night was very dark, but as soon as Vasudev Maharaj took Krsna on his lap, he could see everything as in the sunlight. Vasudev Maharaj came onto the bank of Yamuna and the river gave him mysteriously a free passage over its roaring waters…

…In Gokul he saw that all the cowherd man were asleep. He silently entered into the house of Yashoda Mai, placed Krsna next to her and took her newly born girl back. Than he had returned back to prison, clamped the shackles on himself so that Kamsa could not recognize that so many things had happened…

…Mother Yashoda Mai understood that a child was born to her, but because she was very tired from the childbirth, she was fast asleep. When she awoke, she could not remember whether she had given birth to a male or female child.

We have heard that Krsna never leaves Vrindavan and obviously, He must have been born there. Srila Vishvanath Chakravarti Thakur and other vaisnava acaryas describe that Krsna appeared simultaneously as the son of Devaki and as the son of Yashoda Mai….

…As the son of Devaki He appeared as Vishnu and as the son of Yashoda Mai He appeared as svayam bhagavan Sri Krsna. Actually a twins were born to Yashoda Mai – Krsna and some moments later a girl Yogamaya…

…As soon as the Vasudev Maharaj entered the house of Yashoda Mai, two-handed Krsna assimilated the son of Vasudev Maharaj within Himself. Vasudev Maharaj was not able to understand that this mysterious event had occurred. According to tattva (category), Yashoda Mai-Nandna and Devaki-Nandna are actually one, but from the viewpoint of rasa (devotional mellows) there is a difference between Them.

Nand-bhavan is the place where Krsna and Balaram lived with Nand Maharaj and Yashoda Mai. The architect Visvakarma built the House of Nand Maharaj over 5,000 years ago. It is on a hill at Old Gokul.

It has 84 pillars and that is why it is called Chaurasi Khamba.

Chaurasi means "84" and the pillars in this temple are said to be the original pillars from the house of Nand Maharaj.

Thee are big Deities of Nand Maharaj on the left, mother Yashoda Mai on the right and Lord Balaram in the Middle. Bellow them is Deity of baby Krsna swinging in the cradle…

Nand Maharaj, Yashoda Mai, Rohini Maiya, Sri Balaram and Sri Krsna are the Deities on different altars at Nand Bhavan.

Krsna and Baladeva’s name giving ceremony also took place at Mahavan in the nearby gosala of Nand Maharaj. Gargacarya performed it in a simple way without the festivities because of fear of Kamsa. This simplicity is found there in Vraj even today.

Mahavan and Gokul are in fact one and the same place. Mahavan is called Gokul because go (cows), gopas (cowherd men) and gopis (cowherd ladies) live there., or Mahavan. Beholding its beauty the vrajavasi gopas began very happily reside here…

Happy Janmastami to all. Looking fwd to seeing you all tonight at celebration.

your servant,
Padmanabh das
